Inventory of Hazardous Materials

What is an IHM?

An Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) is a document in which all potentially hazardous material onboard a vessel that can pose a risk to the health and safety of personnel or to the environment is located, identified, quantified & maintained.

The EU SRR and the HKC, both statutory requirements, place responsibility on ship owners, ship builders, suppliers, recycling facilities and national authorities to ensure the safe and environmentally viable management of hazardous materials (hazmats) as well as the sustainable recycling of ships. A fundamental requirement of these regulations is the documentation of hazardous materials on board ships, the so-called Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), and the authorization of ship recycling facilities.

Why do you need it?

It is mandatory for all ships larger than 500 tonnes to keep an IHM. The inventory replaces the Green Passport, adopted in the Hong Kong International Convention in 2009, and is a requirement by the EU Ship Recycling Regulation 2013.

What is the IHM Process?

1. Collection of necessary information and documentation
2. Preparation, on board visual inspection and sampling check
3. Collected samples sent for laboratory analysis
4. IHM prepared by trained and certified personnel

Parameters covered under EU SRR & MEPC

AES Laboratories is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory, engaged in the testing of samples collected for preparation of the IHM.  The laboratory’s scope of accreditation covers the parameters required for testing as per the Materials listed in Annex I of the EU SRR and Appendix 1 (Table A & Table B) of the HKC / Resolution MEPC.269(68) (adopted on 15 May 2015).  Analysis is done following the best practices detailed in the  EMSA’s BEST PRACTICE GUIDANCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE IHM.

AES has extensive facilities for carrying out these tests as per the prescribed methodologies suggested in the guidelines.  Currently the laboratory is involved in carrying out IHM analysis for a large number of vessels worldwide.
